Strasbourg, AlsaceStrasbourg, Alsace was also known as "the Silver City" by the Romans. It is geographically located between Germany and France. The city’s liveliness and location has made it a highly desirable area. Strasbourg: The Island on the Silver River- The center of the city, particularly enchanting with its 15th and 16th century dwellings, is a small island encircled by the river. Strolling through the narrow streets bordered by medieval half-timbered homes, built close to one another, is a pleasurable feeling and probably the best way to experience the true atmosphere of the city. Arising from amidst the medieval streets of the city is the magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral. The Notre- Dame Cathedral of Strasbourg Alsace has an interesting Legend that says that the devil hoped for his image to be represented in the Cathedral, he therefore asked the wind to bring him to the cathedral and wait outside. When he could not find a statue of himself, he became angry and so violently stamped his foot that a stained glass window pierced him. Since that day the wind is still waiting for him outside. The Origin of the Cathedral- According to history, Clovis, the King of the Francs built the cathedral in honor of the Virgin Mary as he promised, his wife, he would if he won the battle against the Germans and conquered the Alsace region. He won the battle in 496 and the construction of the Cathedral began in 510. Notre-Dame Cathedral of Alsace is probably the most beautiful and famous of monuments of the Alsace region, it is a jewel of gothic art. A magnificent building of pink sandstone, it took almost 2 centuries to build and was called the “large pink Angel. Notre-Dame Cathedral of Strasbourg was the highest building in the entire western world until the 19th century. It is still a remarkable experience to climb up the internal staircase to the top and take in the breathtaking view of Strasbourg. The Pillar of Angels- The interior architecture of the cathedral reflects the many changes and tendencies of construction during the two centuries it took to build, and is another source of marvel. The Astronomic Clock of the Cathedral at Strasbourg, Alsace- France is an absolute treasure of the Cathedral. Market Place of Strasbourg - During Medieval times, it was on this square that piglets were sold. It remains one of the city’s more picturesque sites with its seventeenth and eighteenth century homes. Strasbourg, Alsace- France is a medieval city par excellence; Strasbourg is also a modern and innovative city. It has one of the most beautiful parks of the city, the "Orangerie Park", pleasurably used by many strollers. Strasbourg is a city so rich in history and picturesque, yet totally modern. It is definitely a visitors paradise! It is also an excellent point of departure for the discovery of the Alsatian vineyards or the rolling hills of the Vosges region where wine tasting (in moderation) is a real pleasure.
