Alsace WeekendFood, wine and nature lovers never really had it as good as this. An Alsace weekend has it all and much more. With weekend trains coming to Alsace every once in a while from Paris and other cities, Alsace has indeed become a very popular weekend getaway. Hotels in Alsace are mushrooming all over the place, offering tourists amazing weekend packages. Even tourist offices in cities like Strasbourg and Colmar seem to be taking the cue. They have created special Alsace weekend packages for visitors which are simply irresistible to tourists hungry for adventure and fresh air. These weekend packages include a three day/two night stay in a comfortable hotel (the range is between one-star, two-star, or three-star hotels; of which the most common being the two-star range.) As part of your weekend plans at Alsace, you can spend your time going on walks on the Alsace wine routes, eat out at some of the wonderful local joints, spend your time golfing on the sprawling acres of greenery, go out on a fun excursion, driving through the exquisite countryside or try your hand at something more adventurous like mountain biking, cycling or skiing (seasonal). For the more enthusiastic ones, there are special packages designed for ‘weekend cyclists’. Through these packages, tourists can explore the sites and sounds at their own pace through the three hundred miles of bike trails all across the major towns of Alsace. Some of the towns that are highly recommended on long weekends to Alsace include Strasbourg-where one can take a boat tour, Riquewihr-a quaint walled city and Colmar. Some of the popular tourist points in Strasbourg are the Notre Dam cathedral, the Kammerzell house and theNotre Dam museum. The Haut Koenigsbourg is another hot favorite among tourists as it offers a breathtaking view of the Alsatian plains. Also, if one is cycling through the wine routes then, the definite stopovers should include Ribeauville, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg. For a history lover, the definite stop for museums and other historical art and architecture is Mulhouse. It even has some of the best maintained zoological gardens of Alsace. And if you are not the type to go by the favorite list then simply enjoy the lesser known treasures of quaint towns that Alsace has to offer. You can figure your way around by using the local transportation and soaking in the beauty and culture of these picturesque towns. Alsace weekends are not as much about places as about vintage wine, traditional cuisines, old-world charm and lots of fresh air that is bound to leave you with a hangover for a long, long time; making you want to come back for more. For the tourists who want to experience the best of culture and cuisine of Germany and France at one place as also to have the best of varietal wine, Alsace is the perfect weekend destination. From Frankfurt it is only 200 kms. and the picturesque drive up to Alsace is a big temptation as it includes a cascading view of rivers and the mountains. Alsace has also emerged as a favorite weekend destination from Paris as well. As a weekend destination Alsace is only not visited by the tourists during the month of July and August otherwise it is a heaven for tourists more so the backpack tourists. This is on account of adoption of various castles and antique houses as places of residence. These kind of places are available a plenty in Orbey, Cosswiller, Bergheim, etc. One of the favorite destinations for visitors from Germany is Hotel Chaumiere in village Woerth. Though the physical distance from Frankfurt to this village Alsace is only 200 kms. culturally it is a totally different world. This weekend destinations really pamper the tourists with seven-course dinner and a four-course breakfast. One of the popular weekend getaways in Alsace is the Chateau Pourtales which when originally conceived in the 18th century was a hunting lodge and grew out in due course to its present shape. Such is the fame of this lodge as a weekend destination that celebrities like Albert Schweitzer, Friedrich Schiller, and Franz List chose this as a weekend destination at Alsace. The popularity of this Chateau is also owing to the lore of a ghost living inside this castle. This weekend destination has a vast ground which is frequented by the people of the town as also the students. Owing to the usage of the ground by the common people in a big way this vast expanse is used for display of contemporary sculpture. For a weekend tourist this is a bonanza, as you need not visit the museums and other cultural centers to have an insight into the contemporary art scene. It is there on the destination itself for you in its entire splendor. Close to this weekend destination is situated a Radfahrweg (bike trail) which is an ultimate elixir for the bikers as it winds through three countries from Frankfurt to Basel. The icing on the cake for a weekend destination is the bonfire that is organized in the evening and this destination scores on that count as well and to add to the evening a grill is also packed in. Nearby is a Radfahrweg (bike trail) that winds through three countries, from Frankfurt to Basel. Maybe the highlight of the trip - if you could imagine anything topping those scenes from Colmar - was the bonfire and "BBQ" hosted by Isabelle and Willi at the Chateau. Around 2 big campfires were 26 leisure chairs, and a big grill area out of which would come the most heavenly food - fish, then chicken, then a variety of local sausages, accompanied by seven or eight sauces, salads, breads, and your choice of Alsatian wines and beers. One student declared it her favorite night of the entire Ai Study Abroad program so far.
