Famous People of Alsace

A city attains the distinction of being famous owing to its citizens who on account of various contributions that they have made to the cause of humanity make the city proud. Among the famous people of Alsace can be included:

Saint Odile: Among the famous people of Alsace Saint Odile has the distinction of being one of the few ladies whose name is included in this list. She has been bestowed with the honour of patron saint of Alsace. A mountain in Alsace still bears her name and this honour has been provided to her as she held the office of Abess of a Convent.

Hans Arp: (1886-1960). He is among one of the famous people of Alsace as he was one of the founder members of the Dada movement. Hans Arp's name is included in the list of famous people also on account of the fact that he was a sculptor, poet and a painter all rolled into one. He was born in Strasbourg. 

Frederic Bartholdi: (1834-1904)
How many of us would be aware that the statue of liberty has a contribution from Alsace of all the places. In fact it is a truth and that is why Bartholdi's name in included in the list of famous people of Alsace, as it was Bartholdi who sculpted a statue christened as freedom lighting the world. This was made of copper and iron on a framework constructed by Eiffel. This sculpture is in fact the Statue of Liberty in New York, which beckons the visitors to USA.

Albert Schweitzer: (1875-1965): The name of Albert Schweitzer is included among the famous people of Alsace as he won the Nobel peace prize in 1913. He was instrumental in setting up the world famous field hospital in Lambarene in Gabon. Being a gifted organ player and a musicologist he generated finance for his hospital by conducting concert of his performances.

Conrad Hasenfratz, aka Dasypodius: (1531-1601) His claim for inclusion in the list of famous people of Alsace stems from the fact that he was the person who devised Strasbourg astronomical clock, which on account of its ingenuity, and as a repository of knowledge associated with astronomy was considered to be among the seven wonders of the world during the Roman Empire.

Gutenberg: (1394-1468): He should be the leaders among the famous people of Alsace, as were it not for Gutenberg, then the world may not have become the world of letters. He gained the experience in printing during his stay at Strasbourg for ten years, and owing to his presence Alsace emerged as the city to have a printing museum.
