Castles and Chateaux of Alsace

There are 13 main Castles and Chateaux of Alsace:

The Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle- Is an architectural masterpiece with its fantastic views across the Alsatian plain, people visit this monument most frequently. The Castle of Hohlandsbourg - Is Alsace's largest fortified castle and offers an incredible 360° view across the plains and the Vosges.

This castle was built in the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, the Chateaux of Alsace - the Castle of Fleckenstein was once an impenetrable fortress, it is Alsace's most frequently visited unrestored castle.  The three castles of Ribeauvillé- Is the main town on the wine route you can discover mediaeval architecture as you explore this attractive area.

The Castle of La Petite Pierre –Constructed sometime during the 12th century, was extensively modernized by Vauban and is situated between Alsace and Lorraine. The Castle of Spesbourg- Built in 1247, the castle has a large, square, 24 m high keep in addition to an inner courtyard, the architecture is  features a level of refinement rarely seen in the 14th century.

The three castles of Haut-Eguisheim were built sometime during the 11th century. It was a Castle made of pink sandstone, however today only three pink sandstone pillars remain of this structure. The Castle of Ferrette-Built in the 12th century, it overlooks the valley from an altitude of 612 m.

Another Castle/ Chateaux of Alsace is the The Castle of Haut-Andlau-This castle is situated on the hill and overlooks the Black forest and the vineyard. You can feel the vastness of the Black forest and vineyard and you look below. This 14th century castle  was ruined during Napolean wars.  An evening walk through this castle transports you back to the times it was built.

Among the Castles and Chateaux of Alsace is The Castle of Haut-Barr-Also nicknamed "Alsace's eye" the castle is built on three large rocks linked by a walkway known as the "Devils Bridge". The Castle of Lichtenberg-The Lichtenberg family had this castle built on a hillside to protect the Nothern Voseges. One of the most impressive ruins to be found in the Rhine Valley was the Castle of Ortenbourg built somewhere around the 13th century. The Castle of Wangenbourg is a major feudal structure dating from the 13th century, subsequently seriously damaged during the Thirty Years War.
